Pete Bissell is currently grape-growing at his vineyard Broken Windmill Vineyard in Wrattonbully and is a winemaking consultant, having retired from fulltime winemaking in 2020. Pete completed 25 years as Balnaves of Coonawarra chief winemaker following 7 vintages as Wynns Coonawarra Estate Winemaker in Coonawarra, completing a total of 42 vintages including in Tasmania, Hunter , Barossa, Russia, the South of France , New Zealand and Bordeaux.
Pete has previously judged at 38 Australian wineshows and been a guest judge at 4 AWAC judge training courses and 3 TWE Max Schubert Tutorials and judged in the first two James Halliday Cabernet Challenges as part of the Margaret River wineshow in 2016 and 2017, and recently chaired the Coonawarra part of the 2020 James Halliday Cabernet Challenge.
Pete made the 2000 Jimmy Watson trophy winning wine ( Punters Corner Spartacus), was the Qantas Gourmet Traveller Winemaker of the Year in 2005, Balnaves James Halliday’s winery of the year in 2008, Balnaves The Tally and Parker First Growth both listed on Langtons Classification and recently ASVO winemaker of the Year in 2018.
Pete is a board member of the Limestone Coast Landscapes Board and is Chair of the Greenrise Lake Advisory Committee, is a past Chair of the Limestone Coast Grape and Wine council and chairs the Mixed dozen winetrails project.
