Vintage report 2012

First Pick: Padthaway Sparkling Chardonnay, last week of January 2012

Start of Cabernet Sauvignon in Coonawarra: last week of March 2012

Last Pick:  Mt Gambier Pinot Dry Red, Third week of April 2012

The harvest and sales data for grapes will be published by PGIBSA usually in August.

The growing season was warmer than the long term averages.  It was also drier.  The season was marked by short periods of warm weather at critical times.  Vine canopies lignified early and canopy to grape ratios were balanced.

Harvest commenced early in all regions.  Ripening conditions were ideal with minimal rainfall, and mild if not windy conditions for the most part.  The grapes achieved phenological ripeness early with good natural acid with vibrant colour and tannin in the red varieties.

The new wines are of better than average quality, with varietal fruit flavours, balanced acid and vibrant colours.  2012 will offer wines that will have balanced fruit and acid & will age well.
