This workshop held in the Limestone Coast, funded under the Wine Australia Regional Program, provided participants with new information to help understand the impact and management of extreme weather events and hazardous inversions.
Speakers and participants discussed whether inversion behaviours are changing, including the frequency and severity of frost conditions, spray drift, and smoke impacts during critical growing periods.
Observations and historical data in the region indicate a shift in frost event timings, combined with altered growing patterns such as earlier bud bursts, which impacts vineyard management decisions. Understanding these patterns can help in optimising practices and mitigating risks.
The workshop explored new technologies that are being introduced to help monitor and understand inversion conditions, such as the Mesonet Network and WISDs (Wine Industry Smoke Detectors), a smoke sensor tool to improve risk management and facilitate timely and informed decision-making when a smoke event occurs.
In light of changing climatic conditions, workshop participants discussed ideas for future research and the importance of continued discussion to refine management strategies.
