The Toast of the Limestone Coast - Winners Announced

28 October 2004

Two family owned wineries from Coonawarra dominated this year's Limestone Coast Wine Show which was hailed to be the most successful yet.

Hollick Wines Cabernet Sauvignon 2002 took home multiple awards - the Bill Redman Trophy for Best Wine of Show, the trophy for Best Red and Best Cabernet Sauvignon. In addition, the highly prized Arthur Hoffman Trophy for Viticulturist of Best Wine of Show - the only one of its kind - was awarded to Hollick's viticulturist Stuart Sharam. Hollick Wines also took out the Best Blended Red category with their 2002 Shiraz Cabernet.

Balnaves of Coonawarra won four awards including Best Shiraz, Best Chardonnay, Most Successful Exhibitor and were presented with the International Judge Award by guest judge from the UK, Anthony Rose.

James Halliday chairman of Judges said "It was really good to see Hollick Wines back in the top end of things…as a proven Jimmy Watson winner from years back, it's really good to see (them) do so well."

But Coonawarra didn't take all the glory. For the second year in a row Orlando Wines took out the award for Best Museum Wine along with winning the Best Individual Vineyard Wine for their Lawson's Padthaway Shiraz. Browns of Padthaway also triumphed with their Sauvignon Blanc 2004 winning the trophy for Best White.

The panel of expert wine judges chaired for the fourth year in a row by esteemed Australian wine critic James Halliday were blown away by the excellent quality of wines on show. James said "Voting was desperately close and the winners were well deserved."

This year's show was hailed a huge success by the Limestone Coast Wine Show Committee who were thrilled to have secured a record number of 472 wines from 66 exhibitors from regions including Coonawarra, Padthway, Robe, Mount Benson and Wrattonbully - as well as from the surrounding areas that make up the unique Limestone Coast Zone.
