Stonehaven and Penley Estate Stand Out at 2005 Limestone Coast Wine Show!

27 October 2005

Early this week, over 400 fantastic Limestone Coast wines were swirled, sniffed and scored by international wine critic Poh Tiong, Australian wine icon James Halliday and a panel of some of the top palates in the country.

This year's clear winner, the Stonehaven 'Rat and Bull' Cabernet Shiraz 2002, scored Best Wine of Show, Best Red and Best Blended Red. The viticulturalist behind the winning wine, Wrattonbully's Peter Bird, took out the Arthur Hoffman Trophy for Viticulturalist of Best Wine of Show. The viticulturalist trophy is the only one of its kind in Australia, making the Limestone Coast Wine Show unique and one of the highest-rating events on the crowded national circuit.

In addition to the above three trophies, Stonehaven also took out a swag of gold medals, making them the most successful exhibitors in the show.

The Best White Trophy went to the Balnaves of Coonawarra Chardonnay 2003, and the Karl Seppelt Trophy for Best White (non-Chardonnay) was won by Ladbroke Grove Riesling 2005.

The judges were impressed with the strong line-up of wines, with Chairman James Halliday commenting that the quality was consistent with the high standard set at previous shows. In particular, James commended growers and winemakers on producing high quality reds in 2002 and 2004 when vintage conditions were especially challenging. He also gave the 2005 whites a big tick, noting some lovely Rieslings and a clear demonstration of fragrant fruit characters across the board. This year also saw an explosion of new Sauvignon Blanc entries - a trend expected to continue.

Singapore-based wine journalist, critic and this year's overseas judge Poh Tiong, described the majority of the wines as well-made and typical of the quality and style expected from a cool climate region. While the Rat & Bull Cabernet Shiraz took out the major awards, Poh Tiong gave his International Judge's Award to the Penley Estate Phoenix Cabernet 2004, calling it a standout and ranking it with a "world class 1st or 2nd growth Bordeaux". He described it as highly marketable to Asian consumers and said it would age beautifully for 10-20 years.

All entries in this year's show will be uncorked and ready for tasting at Coonawarra Hall tomorrow (Friday October 28). This ultimate Limestone Coast wine tasting experience is a once-a-year opportunity to sample and compare notes with the expert judging panel. Doors open from 11.30am to 1.30pm and there's a $5 entry fee.
